Businesses need to stay ahead of evolving sustainability guidelines, so here is a summary of what you need to know from Cop 29:<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-920756a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"920756a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ol><li><strong><strong> Strengthened Net Zero Targets<br \/><\/strong><\/strong><p>&#8220;Money talks, and as we enter the second quarter of this century, it&#8217;s saying loud and clear: there&#8217;s no stopping the clean energy juggernaut, and the vast benefits it brings: stronger growth, more jobs, less pollution and inflation, cheaper and cleaner energy,\u201d\u00a0<\/p><p>\u2014UN Climate Change Executive Secretary, Simon Stiell, from <a href=\"https:\/\/unfccc.int\/news\/transformational-ndcs-are-not-optional-they-are-opportunities-no-country-can-miss-simon-stiell\">&#8220;Transformational NDCs are not Optional&#8221; | UNFCCC<\/a> )<br \/><br \/><\/p><p>Following the trend of previous years, the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) this year are ambitious. (NDCs are the GHG emission reduction targets made by individual countries.) Major economies like the UK and Brazil have updated their NDCs to support the global target of reaching net zero by 2050.\u00a0<br \/><br \/><\/p><p>What this means for businesses is stricter GHG emission regulatory policies and increased costs associated with compliance, including investments in cleaner technologies, potential penalties for non-compliance, and potential pressure to restructure operations. However, they also allow businesses to capitalize on the rising carbon trading market and plan long-term more confidently.\u00a0<\/p><\/li><li><strong><strong> Carbon Market Mechanisms Finalised\u00a0<br \/><\/strong><\/strong><p>Under Article 6.4 of the Paris Agreement (creation of carbon credits), <a href=\"https:\/\/cop29.az\/en\/media-hub\/news\/cop29-opens-in-baku-with-breakthrough-on-global-carbon-markets\">the international carbon market framework<\/a> was further agreed upon, offering businesses opportunities to trade emissions credits.\u00a0<br \/><br \/><\/p><p>Businesses, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/stories\/2024\/10\/alliance-of-ceo-climate-leaders-cop29\/\">Alliance of CEO Climate Leaders<\/a>, advocated for more investable climate plans, aiming to translate them into long-term policies that would attract private investment.<br \/><br \/><\/p><p>Article 6 of the Paris Agreement will establish reliable and transparent carbon markets to support countries, while markets that comply with Article 6 will help increase investment to developing countries.<br \/><br \/><\/p><p>However, stricter rules on transparency and double-counting mean companies must ensure compliance with rigorous reporting standards.<\/p><\/li><li><strong><strong> Expansion of Climate Finance<br \/><\/strong><\/strong><p>The pathway created on climate finance opens new opportunities for funding sustainable projects and transitioning to low-carbon operations. Developed nations pledged a minimum of <a href=\"https:\/\/wmo.int\/media\/news\/cop29-ends-compromise-climate-financing#:~:text=The%20UN%20climate%20change%20conference,billion%20annually%20to%20support%20adaptation.\">$300 billion annually<\/a> to support global climate initiatives, including funds for developing nations. Businesses operating in these regions may access new funding opportunities for clean energy transitions and adaptation projects.\u00a0<br \/><br \/><\/p><p>Alongside this, the International Energy Agency expects global clean energy investment to exceed <a href=\"https:\/\/unfccc.int\/news\/cop29-un-climate-conference-agrees-to-triple-finance-to-developing-countries-protecting-lives-and\">USD 2 trillion<\/a> for the first time in 2024.<\/p><\/li><li><strong><strong> Loss and Damage Fund Activation<br \/><\/strong><\/strong><p>The activation of the <a href=\"https:\/\/unfccc.int\/news\/cop29-un-climate-conference-agrees-to-triple-finance-to-developing-countries-protecting-lives-and\">Loss and Damage Fund<\/a> provides financial support to nations affected by climate change. Businesses in vulnerable regions should anticipate policy shifts and opportunities for collaboration in climate-resilient infrastructure and solutions.<\/p><p><strong>Summary<\/strong><\/p><p>Regulators, investors, and consumers are increasing their demands for transparent and ambitious ESG strategies.
